“I am fascinated by the way in which the ordinary Pakistani lives amid poverty and insecurity, and yet finds things to be happy about” says the ever smiling and cheerful Qadir Jhatial.
Born in 1986 in a small village in Sindh, Jhatial moved to Lahore to attain a Bachelor’s degree from the prestigious National College of Arts, Lahore (2012).The artist translates his optimistic and blithe character into his works. He does not believe in creating unnecessarily complex or abstruse imagery. He creates what he calls the simple- yet beautiful things in life, making use of bright and vibrant colours. The artist strips away despair from the scenes in his surroundings and brings out the joyous aspects of life within the settings.
Living in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Anarkali, the artist derives inspiration and visuals from within the colourful characters that reside there. Thus, his studio proves to be the perfect setting where these joyous or uplifting pieces of art are conceived.
Qadir Jhatial displayed a solo show Streetwise at Khaas Art Gallery curated by Aasim Akhtar (2015).
