“Practice is a very hard feat. It sharpens the skill as well as acquaints with an experience of self negation,” declares the dynamic Afshar Malik. The artist has had an illustrious career of over 30 years to build upon hard work and practicing “Riyazat” (spiritual exercise).
Afshar Malik (b.1955 in Bahawalpur) majored in Painting at the National College of Arts, Lahore. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in 1978 and later joined the college as a faculty member in 1983-2014 with a two year hiatus to attain a higher diploma at The Slade School of Fine Arts, London.
The artist fearlessly explores many diverse techniques and art forms – testing their possibilities and limitations. Malik insists on keeping things fresh and ever-changing in order to retain his own interest, resulting in a varied portfolio.
The artist craves spontaneity and unexpected results – abandoning the practice before it becomes redundant or too familiar. Malik’s paintings assume a surreal quality because of his fantastical imagery and profuse use of colour.
Afshar Malik’s artwork was displayed in a group show called Origins at Khaas Art Gallery, Islamabad (2014). His pieces are also a part of our permanent collection.
